The islands are accessible on the south via the natural “sand bar” connecting Milton and South Hero. On the north, just before Canada are bridges through Alburgh connecting to Rouses Point in New York and Swanton in Vermont. There is a car ferry from Plattsburg, New York. But the best approach to the islands is the Colchester Causeway, a 3-mile rail trail culminating in a bike ferry ride to cross the 200 foot “cut” that allows boats to travel around the southern tip of South Hero. This is a unique and very special experience that sets the mood for a magical day.
